NRA Personal Protection in the Home Course
(8 hours / 250 rounds)
Private Lesson: $400/individual, or $480 couple's rate
Private Small Group Rate (3-6 students): $350 per individual
This course follows the NRA's Personal Protection in the Home curriculum, and is intended for those with a desire to incorporate a handgun into their home protection strategy. This course is intended for those with a basic familiarity with their handguns, and able to demonstrate mastery of safe gun handling. We will review the fundamentals, but the primary focus is on realistic defensive techniques inside the home; how to respond to an intruder; and what to expect post-incident.
Course Outline
This course has both an academic and hands-on portion. Plan to spend about 5 hours in the classroom, and around 2 1/2 - 3 hours on the range.
The following topics are covered in the classroom:
- Firearms safety, safe storage, and gun owner responsibilities
- Introduction to Defensive Shooting
- Fundamentals of pistol marksmanship, and how they are modified during a defensive encounter (body stance, grip, and the five fundamentals)
- Basic Defensive Pistol Skills
- Clearing malfunctions safely
- Firearms & the Law
- Strategies for Home Safety & Responding to an Intruder
- Selecting a Pistol & Ammunition for Self-Defense
Range specific topics are first covered in the classroom, using dry-fire rehearsals before progressing to live-fire application on the range:
- Shooting from the standing & kneeling positions*
- Shooting from behind cover (standing & kneeling)*
- Clearing malfunctions (hands-on, using dummy rounds)
- Speed reloading techniques (semi-auto & revolvers)
- Basic movement techniques (rearward & lateral movement)
- Verbal Challenge Drill
- Demonstration of the Tueller Drill
* The course of fire can be modified for those with physical disabilities, so please let me know in advance if you have a condition that may limit your shooting from the standing or kneeling positions.
